Over the past few years, hair treatments have evolved significantly due to the growing popularity of highlights and hair coloring. New treatments appear on the market every month, making it difficult to choose. How can you navigate the options?
Most treatments consist of a surfactant (or surface-active compound) derived from coconut or castor oil. Each manufacturer has its own recipe, designed specifically for color-treated hair, hair lacking volume, etc. It is important to remember that damaged hair does not heal and can only be repaired temporarily. It can be successfully treated, but if the treatment is stopped after a few washes, it will revert to its original state (it will lose its treatment and moisture). There are no products whose effects are permanent.
Only regular trimming of your hair will do anything about it. When it comes to treatment, it's important to choose one that you can afford to renew regularly. There's no point in paying a lot: compare the first five ingredients of different products and you'll be surprised!
Hair treatments are acidic, with a pH of around 3.5, which has the effect of closing the hair cuticles. Personally, I suggest a protein-based treatment (keratin or other) for broken or very damaged hair. It is important to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully before applying, as some treatments have a very short processing time of no more than 3 or 7 minutes. Leaving them on for too long could have the opposite effect! This is why you should NOT sleep overnight with a protein treatment in your hair.
Likewise, it is not recommended to activate a heat treatment (using a hairdryer, plastic cap or hot towel) unless the instructions for use require it.
My Best Grandma's Recipes
1- For dry hair
Mix and apply equal amounts of coconut oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, and castor oil to your hair.
Apply in sections using a brush, massaging the oils into the hair.
Then wrap your head in a towel for several hours or even overnight.
After the application time, rinse and wash with a mild shampoo (everyday or for normal hair).
If you're really into homemade recipes, try a regular egg shampoo by mixing four egg yolks with a teaspoon of honey (honey helps seal in moisture) and the juice of one lemon. Whisk everything together and apply like a regular shampoo.
2- For split ends
Apply shea butter to the lengths and ends in small sections.
Massage everything in, then wrap your head in a warm, damp towel or one straight from the dryer.
Wear for one hour and wash hair with mild shampoo without rubbing.
Perform this treatment once a week or as needed.
3- After-beach lotion
Highly alkaline , seawater has a pH of around 8.3 which has the effect of opening your cuticles and making your hair dry and prone to split ends.
In a spray bottle, mix two cups of green tea and the juice of one lemon (the pH of lemon is 2.9).
Apply after shampooing or directly after the beach.
DO NOT APPLY IN THE SUN! Lemon may alter your color.
4- For oily hair
On unwashed hair, apply cade oil in small sections with a brush. Massage in.
Then wrap your hair in a towel for an hour, then wash it with a mild shampoo (for normal or everyday hair).
